How Much Mulch Do I Need? Calculator + Suffolk County Pricing

The Quick Formula

Mulch is sold by the cubic yard. One cubic yard covers about 162 square feet at 2 inches deep — roughly the size of a single-car driveway.

Here is the formula:

Square Feet x Depth (inches) / 324 = Cubic Yards Needed

For example: a 20ft x 30ft area at 3 inches deep = 600 x 3 / 324 = 5.6 yards.

Common Coverage Estimates

Area Size2" Deep3" Deep4" Deep
500 sq ft3.1 yd4.6 yd6.2 yd
1,000 sq ft6.2 yd9.3 yd12.3 yd
2,000 sq ft12.3 yd18.5 yd24.7 yd
5,000 sq ft30.9 yd46.3 yd61.7 yd

Tip: For garden beds being mulched for the first time, use 3 inches. For annual top-off of existing beds, 2 inches is enough to refresh color and maintain weed suppression.

How to Measure Your Beds

  1. Break irregular shapes into rectangles. Measure length and width of each section separately.
  2. Round up. A 12.5 x 8 foot bed? Call it 13 x 8 = 104 sq ft.
  3. Subtract hardscape. Don't count patios, walkways, or large rock features.
  4. Add 10% buffer. Beds have edges and dips. A little extra prevents a second trip.

For tree rings, measure the diameter and use: diameter x diameter x 0.785 x depth / 324.

A 6-foot diameter tree ring at 3 inches = 6 x 6 x 0.785 x 3 / 324 = 0.44 yards — about half a yard per tree.

When to Mulch on Long Island

The best time to apply mulch in Suffolk County is mid-April through May, after the last frost and before summer heat sets in. Fall mulching (October-November) protects root systems through winter.

Spring timeline:

  • March–early April: Order mulch, prepare beds (pull weeds, edge borders)
  • Mid-April: Apply mulch after soil has warmed
  • May: Top off any thin spots before summer heat
